What I think you're talking about here @Bow is the human need for belonging. How can we belong if we are not understood? This is why long-term masking of certain aspects of self (e.g. for me a huge one has been sexuality and gender) is actually painful - we realise people don't like the real us, but the thing, the mask, that exhausts us.
